A community meeting at the Whakapara Marae on 4th October 2015 agreed that a delegation of people would go to Waihi to look at the effects that mining has on that community. Even though Waihi is different to Puhipuhi – for example Waihi is a township with the mine in the central area, Puhipuhi is rural, – it was felt that Waihi experiences would still be relevant to the discussion around mining in Puhipuhi.
Four people went to Waihi, Te Raa Nehua and Dale van Engelen (Ngāti Hau), Kiri Edwards (Ngāti Manu), Clive Stone (Ngatiwai). They spoke to the tāngata whenua including Ngāti Hako, Tamaterā, Ngāti Hikairo, local residents, Minewatch and the Oceana mining company. We thank all of these people very much for their time and willingness to talk to us.
