The Hikurangi Swamp is immediately downstream from the Puhipuhi catchment. Currently, the water from Puhipuhi is relatively clean following heavy rain. The farmers in the swamp area and other downstream areas are massively affected by flooding. If the water from Puhipuhi was to be contaminated by an overflow from a mine tailings dam, or if the tailings dam was to be breeched, the devastation would be complete.
This interview on TVNZ’s Breakfast program 22-Aug-2014 with Hikurangi Swamp farmer Ben Smith, highlights the problems of heavy rainfalls in the area.
